As the majestic Talamanca Mountain Range spills down to the
Caribbean, a string of tiny beach villages from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo,
follow the palm fringed coastline, with cultural diversity.

Farther south is the border town of Sixaola and access to Panama's
pristine Caribbean coast.

Puerto Viejo is a fun little Beach town and the beaches along
the coast have a wild surf with a coral barrier reef in Punta Uva, great for scuba diving when the waters are calm.

The beach coast winds around, first you come to the main beach town of Puerto Viejo, then you follow the road to Playa Cocles, then Playa Chiquita, then Punta Uva, where the bumpy road finishes at the Gandoca - Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve. West are the Talamanca Hills and the Bri Bri and Cabecar Indian Villages.

The main Beach Town of Puerto Viejo is filled with little shops and restaurants with delightful fresh "Lobster Specialties" Caribbean and
International cuisine.  Arts and Crafts and Souvenirs can be found, along
with beach clothes and fun Reggae "Rasta" items. Internet Cafes and book stores, street vendors, small grocery and liquor stores and fun nightlife.

But be forewarned, these are poorer villages, than the Pacific side of
Costa Rica, you must keep your valuables and passports close and out
of reach of temptation. (It is not a good idea, to leave them in your hotel
rooms).  In other words, it's better to be safe than sorry.

To Get There: You take the "pot-holed" road, that runs from
Cahuita to Puerto Viejo (18km), (8km to Punta Uva and a further 6km to Manzanillo). There are Eco Hotels and Restaurants all along the way.
All Buses to the border town of Sixaola, (6 hours) or to Manzanillo, (5 hours)
stop in Puerto Viejo. MEPE from Limon (phone: 758-1572) to the town of
Bri Bri, hourly (2 hours).  Cabbies, who meet the buses, often plug certain
hotels, which pay them commission.
